Savitri Girls’ College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, was established by the Savitri Educational Charitable Trust on September 14th 1972, to make its students self sufficient, socially conscious and academically sound citizens. Located in the prominent Burrabazar locality in central Kolkata, the college that was begun to cater to the local populace now attracts students from all over the city. The college offers programmes and courses (within the scope of the university curriculum) that reflect the goals and the objectives of the institution.
Like any other educational institution Savitri Girls’ College aspires to impart quality learning to its students. We are however constrained due to infrastructural limitations and despite our best intentions we find ourselves unable to start a B.Sc programme. We nevertheless try to fully utilize the available resources by accommodating a wide range of activities from debates, seminars, workshops, book fairs, social programmes to sports and vocational courses from time to time. We have introduced computer training courses for the benefit of the students. Savitri Girls’ College in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) also offers distance learning programmes.

SavitriGirls’ College was established on September 14, 1972 by Savitri Educational Charitable Trust. Late H. K. Jhajharia and M. L. Jalan became the Secretary and President of the College after its inception in 1972.
The purpose of the institution is to empower women through education and other developmental activities. To this end we try to devise a wide range of interesting and fruitful programmes which would in turn promote an atmosphere of intellectual alertness and good moral health. We aim to empower girls who come to us from less fortunate and privileged backgrounds so that they may recognise their potential and work towards becoming responsible citizens of the country. In the context of a globalised world, we try to prepare the students keeping the larger picture of their ambitions and functions once they leave the institution to take up employment outside. The college conducts through the various cells, societies, and especially the N.S.S, several programmes that may together give a holistic and comprehensive education to the student.
The College was accredited in the year 2006 by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college went through its second cycle of reaccreditation and obtained a ‘B’ grade in 2014.
